Great market opportunities for Israeli Herbs
Demand in the herb sector has been increasing, however Sales Manager, Yehonatan Kedem from Kedem Galprie Ltd does not feel that demand has surpassed production yet.
Herb prices are very stable compared to other fruit and vegetables. There are winter and summer prices, however, unusually hot weather in Italy has made for an unusual situation. Three years ago their production would have been focused on imports this time of year, but the weather has meant that Italy is still producing for the European market.
This situation has had an affect on Israeli herb exports. “However, the winter season is nearing and temperatures are dropping in Germany and Italy which are strong and competitive markets. Once the weather changes, imports from Israel and Africa will start to increase. Germany is a big market for chives and basil, so once Italian production slows, they can enter the market. On the other side, unique export products such as sea vegetables (Salicornia), and sea weeds amongst others, are in very high demand,” shares Yehonatan Kedem. “One of the Kedem Galprie main products are the sea vegetables and we see a large increase of sales and interest”.
A lot of growers located in Kenya and Ethiopia are actually Israeli, which means that they are using the same high technology which makes them competitive to Israel. They have been able to establish themselves with certain items, but they are still experiencing problems with basil, a very sensitive herb, which Israel is better equipped to deal with. “African prices are very attractive to customers which means that it tends to be preferred. High quality is important to Israeli production and is what gives it the competitive edge against the lower African prices”.
“More people are coming in contact with items that they hadn’t before. Companies in Holland have done a great job of introducing new items and new herb varieties into the market. Microgreens, sea vegetables, and edible flowers are really growing in popularity. In general, people are looking for new products that they can offer to supermarkets and customers.
Salicornia, which is very common in the UK, is starting to be offered in Scandinavia and Germany. Business is becoming more inter-market and orders are increasing.”
The CPMA 2015 fair is Canada main fruit & vegetables main event and was held in Montreal. The Galprie team visited the trade show and we consider it a big success. Unlike the EU trade shows the CPMA is smaller and more intimate show. That what makes it more interesting and attractive with high opportunity for us to meet our clients and establish relationships with new companies that is with our interest to work with.
The CPMA is not only a trade show but a working community of the fruit & vegetables filed. Every year the show is held in a different place in Canada, what makes it interesting to see companies from different regions of this wonderful country.
We are planning to attend the 2016 show and expect it to be no less but grate!
hope to see you there…
In the past 3 years, Galprie Company has become one of the leading producers and exporters of sea vegetables. With a long list of our product line our clients can find the Salicornia, Portulaca, sea aster, sea weeds and many more interesting items of the sea vegetables. We see a growing market for this item, mostly due to its fantastic salty taste and long shelf life.
The sea vegetables, with its most attractive item – The Salicornia, are grown in the northern part of Israel near the Dead Sea on a salty ground. The Salicornia variety was developed in Israeli university of the Negev and the salicornia variety is now a year round product, with more taste, more shelf life and less fibers.
The reasersh and development in the south of Israel is working on developing new varieties and plants for our export. All of our products are with the highest care and quality.
The main problem today is that many people do not know how to use the sea vegetables in their home kitchen. We up loaded for our clients a recipe for using the salicornia to send to their customers.
The sea vegetables are with high nutrition’s values. It is low in calories and good for diet. Also people with diabetes and bad heart condition use the Salicornia in Salads, cooking and more. The Salicornia is a salty plant but it is low in Sodium, potassium and magnesium.

2015 carrots season is over and looking back on this operation fills us with pride and we’re all looking forward for the next season. Our packing house is operational for five seasons but this is the first time that we’re handling a large-scale operation. After investing so much energy and heavy finance, we know now that it was all worth it.
This season we are planning to have three times more volume and even longer season (from mid-February until August). We invested in small packaging machinery and can produce now very large volumes of 1kg and 2lbs bags for retailers and chain stores. Moreover, we added cooling rooms to the packing house to keep the carrots in the perfect temperature for preserving best quality.
We will start marketing globally with several programs that we are closing just now and we will guarantee to our clients the full service and a strong supply chain.
We welcome you to contact us for this next carrot season!
